[sticky post] Grammar Sticky

Now that I have a lot of the basics of the grammar figured out, I'm going to start making a series of posts going over it all and link them to a sticky post (if I can figure out how to do that). This will make it easier to look up specific aspects of the language and help me crystalize the concepts and work out the kinks.

So for those who've been following this blog, bear with me. I'm going to be restating a lot of what I've already been over.

Tense Marking Nouns

Nouns, not verbs, are marked for tense in FairyLang. The unmarked forms are present tense, and they can be marked for past or future with the following pattern:

In the past tense, an I is inserted before the gendered vowel. If the gendered vowel is a Y, and it is not followed by a consonant, Y changes to A. If it is followed by a consonant, it can remain Y or change to A (personal choice/dialectal).

myn > miyn, mian
mysu > mysiu
pwcel > pwciel
uryg > iuryg
elyn > ielyn

In the future tense, a Y is added after the gendered vowel. When Y is the gendered vowel, it always changes to A.

myn > mayn
mysu > mysuy
pwcel > pwceyl
uryg > uyryg
elyn > eylyn

Gerunds and Intransitive Clauses

Gerunds are formed similarly to plurals, with the suffix CV, where C is the lenited version of the final consonant and V is the gendered vowel. In multi-sylabic verbs, where there is a gendered vowel elsewhere in the verb, that one is changed to a neutral vowel (usually a).

Examples:
burkhi (to bark) -> barkhingu (the barking)
cari (to befriend) -> carina (the befriending)
khunti (to howl) -> khantisu (the howling)
matsi (to meow) -> matsisu (the meowing)

Intransitive clauses, i.e. clauses with no direct object, are conjugated normally in the imperfect aspect. But in the perfect and predictive aspects, the verb is replaced with "ni" (to be/do) and the gerund of the verb becomes the direct object.

Examples:
matsi mïtsu = the cat meows
ni mïtsu matsisiu = the cat has meowed
ni mïtsu matsisuy = the cat is going to meow

Tense and Aspect

In FairyLang, tense and aspect are indicated by tense markings on the nouns. Specifically, an i is added before the gendered vowel for past tense and a y after it for future tense.

Examples:
fie, fe, fey = fairy (past, present and future)
pian, pan, payn = woman (past, present and future)
mïtsiu, mïtsu, mïtsuy = cat (past, present and future)
qhandio, qhando, qhandoy = hell hound (past, present and future)

Tense marking on the subject determines the overall tense of the clause. Tense marking on the object(s) is relative to the subject and determines aspect. Past object = perfect aspect, present object = imperfect aspect, future object = predictive/intentitive aspect.

Examples:
cari mïtsiu mbarkhu = the cat befriended the dog
cari mïtsu mbarkhu = the cat befriends the dog
cari mïtsuy mbarkhu = the cat will befriend the dog

cari mïtsiu mbarkhiu = the cat had befriended the dog
cari mïtsu mbarkhiu = the cat has befriended the dog
cari mïtsuy mbarkhiu = the cat will have befriended the dog

cari mïtsiu mbarkhuy = the cat was going to befriend the dog
cari mïtsu mbarkhuy = the cat is going to befriend the dog
cari mïtsuy mbarkhuy = the cat will be going to befriend the dog
